If you think sleep apnea is just snoring or waking up tired, then you are mistaken. It’s a serious condition that can impact your overall health when it’s left untreated. It might seem odd how simply snoring and exhaustion can have systemic consequences, but it very well may be the case. However, you may ask exactly what the risks are of not treating sleep apnea. Here are just a few you need to know.

Drowsiness During the Daytime

As was mentioned, this condition can make you feel more tired in the morning than when you went to bed the night before. However, it can have an impact on your safety or make you have trouble going about your day.

You may be at a higher risk of workplace accidents or drowsy driving, both of which can lead to unfortunate situations. Also, you may have trouble remembering things or concentrating. This can affect your professional life as people may not be able to rely on you as much.

Affects Your Heart

Those with sleep apnea stop breathing multiple times (five minimum) a night for at least 10 seconds or longer. Each episode lowers your oxygen level, which in turn makes your heart work harder. It will need to pump more to deliver that gas to the rest of your body. You may have high blood pressure or irregular heart rhythms. There has even been a link between this condition and strokes.

Impacts Your Mood

Your brain can also be affected by sleep apnea. When it goes untreated, you may be more irritable or have mood swings. Depression and anxiety can worsen, making it harder for you to stay motivated day-to-day. You may be less prone to engage in daily physical activities.

Develop Weight Concerns

Building off the point above, when you don’t get enough sleep, you may be less prone to exercising. You may become more sedentary or have unhealthy eating habits. Without a balanced diet, you won’t be able to fully support your body. For instance, this disorder can impact insulin regulation. This is responsible for how your body uses sugar, so when it is affected, you may develop higher blood sugar levels.

Strains Relationships

All of this can then lead to issues within your social and love life. The intense mood changes and less motivation can make it harder for you to keep up with the relationships you have. You may not be as open to going out or to events, eventually causing strain between you and your friends or partner.

Instead, by getting your sleep apnea treated, you’ll be able to avoid these problems. Although you may think this condition only impacts you during the night, remember how it can affect your overall health. By getting the professional help you need, you’ll be able to enjoy a better life and get the restful nights you deserve.
